| Hubby and I have just finished making a hexagon Rose Bed we bought two heaped trailer loads of sandy soil ( all they had here ) and I added Lime, aged chook manure, and a bit of another fertlliser, one cubic metre of home made compost plus a couple of high wheelbarrows loads of soil from our block, watered it well covered it with a very thick layer of lucerne and will let it mature nicely till we get back from Melbourne the middle of June. Did I forget anything ???
What I need now is advice on what Roses to buy while in Melbourne. I have been on the Magic Garden web site and of course cannot make up my mind so will go there and see them all, also try to get to Treloar, I am mostly after Standards so all you clever rose growers could you please give me some ideas on which roses to look for. Standards, Dark Orange ( Not like Just Joey that I have ) Dark Red Pink ( I have Mary Rose, two Bonica's and Lovely Lady) so looking for more a pink with white or cream. Mauve/Purple Blue or Lavender White ( Not Iceberg ) Creamy Beige I want to do two seperate Arches and have decided on Crepuscule or will it be too big for one each side of the arch about 2100mm high ( 7ft ) that I walk under a lot during the day, if so can any one recomend two different ones that would do, one has to be a similar colour, the other does not matter. I also want to cover a couple of fences about 1500/1800mms ( 5 to 6ft ) high, would Ballerina or Apple Blossom be OK if I can get them, feel free to recomend others, does not matter what colour And if that is not enough I live in Brisbane so get lots of BS, cut worms, and it is very humid here so looking forward to all the help and advice I can get in the next week so that I can do my research, and hit these Rose Places with list in hand. Many Thanks....MM

| Dear Mistymorn I second the crepuscle for the arch with one on both sides as I have seen this and it is gorgeous. I have 5 creps on my front verandah and she is so large that they were all getting out of hand. So with advice from here, I went aloing with big hedger clippers and shaved of all the bits that stuck out where I didn't want them and now it is absolutely glorious with many blooms. I suspect you may need to do the same with your arch a few times a year but it that is OK, it will look divine. For your standards, I have a blue moon bush that has gorgeous flowers and it would be a lovely standard I think. I am too new to it to have more ideas for the other colours. Good luck! What fun planning which roses to buy. I am also making new beds and am just about to off load the trailer of manure that I spent yesterday afternoon shovelling up and to get rid of the mountain of newspapers in my laundry. |
| Thanks kevarose I will take your advice about using the big hedge clippers I may have to do them even more than you as things seems to fly away out of control here after a good shower of rain, trouble is we dont get many anymore so its a bit dry. Will also put Blue Moon on my list. And yes I am enjoying planing this new rose bed. Cheers...MM |

| Seduction makes a beautiful standard - my Mum has a row of 8 and what a site they are - always flowering and so disease resistant. I have the bush version and it is a beauty. My friend wanted a good standard and I advised her of Seduction - and she has thanked me ever since. You could use this as your white rose - though it is blushed light pink too - though white is it's main colour, the pink shows nicely in this cooler autumn weather. Lovely frilly petals too - though only slight perfume. Rach |

| Hullo MM. I would recommend New Dawn as a climber for your arch I don't have it here but at my last home I had it, it constantly flowers & it covered the arch same size as yours in 18 mths. it is a medium size full rose soft dence looking pink it is just lovely it will need clipping like the others but well worth it, I look forward to hearing what you buy happy hunting. Jan. |
| Thanks Rach you know I seen a potted Seduction about three weeks ago, but talked myself out of buying it as my Apricot Nectar and La Sevillana were potted and I am not happy with either. Yes it is a beautiful rose and it will go on my list. Hi Jan and Thanks also I will certainly let you know what I end up buying yours sounds like a good one too. |

| Magic Garden Roses have a great display garden including sections for standards and climbers. You will be able to check growth habit before deciding. There is also a fence covered in Crepuscle that was very beautiful when we visited in April. Unfortunately, we didn't get to Treloars. Hazel. |
| Thanks Hazel I hope there are a few roses still flowering by time I get there. MM. |
| Still looking for the Dark Orange & Dark Red any ideas anyone..MM |
| Try standard Camp Davids for your dark red .... you cannot go wrong with them. They got scent, nice form, thick tough petals that don't ball in the rain and all the young growth is a dusky burgundy red-brown colour. |

| Steve's right about Camp David what a great rose especially in standard form. Also dark oranges I would consider 'Brass Band' as they have an avenue of these standards at Werribee and they always look fantastic. Pat Austin could be another consideration. I love Seduction standards (used to have two then unfortunately left them behind). I then decided to get a tall rootstock with about twelve grafts in seduction that I enjoyed this year... Enjoy it whatever your choices.... |
| Gosh Garry - 12 grafts on one rootstock - what does it look like? A wonderful full pillar or ?? I am fascinated |
| Thanks Steve and Garry I do like the look of the Camp David so its on my list. Garry where about in Werribee are they as my brother lives close so I can take a look. Thanks everyone for your Help....MM |

| Mistymorn, The State Rose Garden is at Werribee Park next to the old Mansion (Chirnside's) and also Werribee Zoo. They all have one common entrance on south? side of Princes Hwy. To get to the gardens keep following the road to the mansion (past the zoo). It's a fantastic day out for all 3 features although it's hard to get all 3 in and they all deserve a bit more time (imo). See link below. Kevarose, The pole is about six feet and because Seduction is such a strong grower it looks like a x-mas tree shape. It's done really well in it's first year and I think it will just get better. Something different although i would love to graft one myself rather than buying one for more self satisfaction. Garry |
Here is a link that might be useful: Vic Rose Society - Public Gardens
| Thanks Gary I know where that is, and a few of the others on the Link. We are leaving in eight hours and have just completed my list, so back to the packing. Cheers MM. |
| Hi there, Have been off line for a while and I deceided to get on and see what everyone is doing. Are you still looking for a Dark Red Rose? The dardest I've seen is Black Beauty! It is just magic to look at. Another Red is Mister Lincoln but he fades with the heat and looks more like a Mrs, than a Mr LOL Here is a link for you www.helpmefind.com you can search for roses by colour perfume or habit. I'm sure you will be able to find something to suit your climate there. |
| Hi april I ended up getting Camp David and at present it has a mass of buds. It will probably start bloomimg really soon. Thanks anyway.Cheers..MM. |
| MM Have you got a champagne? I have only seen pictures of it but think the cream colour looks lovely Jan |
| Hi Jan. No I didn't get any cream ones. I looked it up in my rose book and it said Buff Yellow to Apricot. Trouble is after our Qld Sun is done with it, yes it probably will look cream. Were you going to buy it ??? or just looking ...Cheers..MM. |
| Champagne looks great outdoors here and even better in a greenhouse but it's a BS magnet.Unless your a flower grower or have a greenhouse (no bs infections here...just mountains of mildew) or spray every week, then give it a miss. Thrip |

| Hi MM I have Fionas Wish as a standard and it is terrific. Bushy vigourous habit, strong red/apricot colours. the blooms last a long time both on the plant and in the vase.Knockout perfume Also -Ian Thorpe? Quite red. This could be a good idea. Kardinal and Christian Dior are both dark red . I have all of the above mostly as standards and found they have great disease resistance and vigourous bushy growth. If you have BS problem in your area could I suggest you trim out the centre of the bush for good air flow? A friend told me that and now I have almost no BS worth speaking of.(touch wood!) Lets know how you go! cheers Michelle Good Luck! |
| Did you get anything else other than the Camp David standards? |
| Hi Snodge Yes I got these Standards. Charles de gaulle So far only one Standard has flowered but all the climbers, ramblers, carpet roses, have been blooming for two weeks...Cheers..MM. Here is a Pic of the Seduction Standard flower. |
