my pierre de ronsard doesn't have any blooms

hi i'm from perth, and it's autumn in perth.
i put some mushroom compost and some potash around my pierre de ronsard bush in summer and until now it's putting up new shoots and full of dark green lushes foliage but no flowers or buds at all.

I'm a bit worried, because the plant is putting so much energy on foliage and new shoots, which i will have to again cut down in winter. somebody please tell me what i'm doing wrong. And also some advise as to how to prune the bush.

RE: my pierre de ronsard doesn't have any blooms

Pierre de Ronsard is one of the most disappointing roses out of 120 or so I had in my garden. It only has to get a little bit damp and the blooms turn soggy and brown, but that maybe is due to Melbourne's weather. Even so there are many others that don't do it. Climbers generally flower on the second season's wood, so if you are cutting off the new shoots you won't have anything to flower on next year. Prune the old dead wood and let the others grow up when they will flower the second year. Prune them by cutting off the flowers for a vase. You can shorten anything old or too long, by about one third in winter.

Thank you for your comments triciac, i really appreciate it. But here in perth with the warmer climate and sandy soil the flowers of PDR don't go soggy. The first few flowers were absolutely stunning. It just stopped flowering, maybe because of my bad pruning methods. Anyway you learn from your mistakes. Thank you again for your advise on pruning.

I'm with triciac on the balling problem. Pierre doesn't like moisture on the flowers, that's for sure. Mine hasn't borne well either. I've been wondering for some time whether it's due for a shovel prune.

My two Pierre de Ronsard, which I grew from cuttings, bloom continually all threw the growing season and the blooms are beautiful. I will post a photo of some of the blooms in the gallery Forumn.
Can you post photos in with your posts ? I forget or how you go about it ?

thank you maddy and rosemeadow for the comments. what do you mean by balling problem? I actually ended up giving a very harsh prune to my pierre de ronsard, and waiting for it to bloom, it's putting on new growth but still no buds insight. The bush has a very nice growth with lovely green leaves, don't have the heart to spade it. i 'm willing to give it some time.

And rosemeadow, i haven't figured out how to post photos yet, just got my camera back from warranty repairs.

Hi Karima

On the link below is the only way you can upload pics to this Roses Forum.
You can do them from your computer if you want to post on the Oz Garden Gallery only.

Cheers...Mary-Anne

Balling is when the bud just does not open, due to rain. It eventually goes all brown and soggy, not what you want from your lovely rose bush. I don't know much about rose growing in Perth but I wouldn't be expecting a rose to get buds in winter, certainly not in the ACT.
