espalier crepuscle

I planted 5 crepuscles under a narrow front deck (14 m long and only about 1 metre wide) so they would cover the front rails on that deck which is my entrance also. There is a path to my B&B along the rails so not having a rose to come out an attack was an issue. In my state of even more lack of knowledge 18 months ago I thought "oh crepuscle will be great as it is thornless and it is the gentle color I want against my greyed-out timber now a taupey silvery color". I planted french lavender between the roses. Well I LOVE the colour and the softness of the rose habit. But the monster is invading. I can no longer walk along this deck and clearing the path is becoming an issue. Basically I now realise that I want to espalier the 5 creps - so that there is little stems sticking out on either side. But the monster are now so vigorous that it would be daunting to even tie down all the sticky out branches. It is in full sun all day and is flooded periodically as I have no guttering and the edge of the roof is just above the creps (which is why the deck is only a metre wide). Never added any fertiliser or manure or anything to this lot but they are clearly happy and vigorous.

I am now thinking that two bushes would have been enough, not 5 and should move 3 of them somwhere else. Do you agree? As I write I am looking at many blooms of crep on the rails in front of my window and I do not want to lose them. But I could spend a day a week training crep - as if I do not have enough to do.

Ideas appreciatred

RE: espalier crepuscle

Wow!!! I'm very glad I read this. My Crepescule is in a pot at the moment, quite small and controlable. I was thinking about planting it around a garden seat under a pergola. I will plant only one at each corner, rather than the three along each side that I was contemplating.

This is a valuable lesson for me to learn. I've been growing all my roses in pots with the hope of learning more about their individual habits and requirements, before I start big time rose gardening, But it looks like pot growing behaviour is very different from in-the-ground growth........back to the ol' drawing board!!
Thanks Kevarose. Every little bit of info like this helps ua novices not make big mistakes.

Hi, I'd take to Crepuscule with hedge clippers. It's a lovely rose but can become large if you don't cut it back hard for winter. I grew one on a trellis 2M X 2M with a Climbing Gold Bunny, and it ended up smothering Gold Bunny. I'm going to get another as it was gorgeous but I'll find somewhere else for it.

I've got one along a fence and it hasn't been in long but ... you're spot on - it's a triffid, no mistake. But I love it and I think Barbara's suggestion re hedge clippers (hang the science of rose pruning) is sensible.

You've wanted great rose display and now you've got it. I'd just enjoy the view and wield the clippers.

Cheers

Thanks - today I get out the hedge clippers and ATTACK. It is lovely to see things growing. I do love the soft colours of this rose.
