A Winning Brew

Does anyone else make their own liquid fertilizer? I use a large plastic gabage bin, put in some horse poo, comfrey leaves, milk thistle, nettles, hand full of dynamic lifter and fill with water. After about 3 weeks its a 'deadly' brew and I water it down about 10:1 and give it too all my plants - including my 35 potted roses. Works a treat.

Quick question: I heard magnesium (epsom salts) is good for roses and a bit should be given each year? Is this true.

Sounds interesting Autumn leaf - is the comfrey useful as I have plenty of that as well as manure? I might make some up as I have a spare wheelie bin also and could push it around dispensing "tea".

Epsom salts is supposed to encourage basal breaks(new canes)
and helps yellowing leaves recover.

kevarose - comfery is supposed to be like an 'activator' in the brew. I supposed as well as adding nutrients it helps the brew to compost. Its a good brew but a bit stinky - so dont get it on your clothes lol.

Cimmaron - thanks for letting me know about the magnesium.

I just make chook poop soup. Big garbage bin with about a foot of the stuff from the bottom of the old chook house, top it with water, let it brew for a while and keep topping it up with water as I use it, about a gallon bucket each.. means a lot of walking backwards and forwards, (probably good for me anyway) but the roses are laughing.
Brewing it this way means no weeds as soaking them for so long rots any seeds in it.
Apparently - according to my husband, my mother-in-law used to do the same with cow manure many years back.
there's nothing new under the sun is there?

Nah, nothing new, only things we're rediscovering that came close to being lost in this new age of chemicals and scientists.
Seaweed is supposed to be excellent in liquid food brews too, though I understand in some places you're not allowed to collect it. Personally I can't see the harm considering on metropolitan beaches if you don't collect it the council has it removed or dozed into the sand or something....not that I make a habit of collecting seaweed of course!
