Generosa Roses

I am interested in getting a few more of Guillot's Generosa range [they are a bit like DAs], but apart from Sonia Rykiel, I cannot find them anywhere. From my research it seems that Walter Duncan got the breeding rights, but since his nursery has since been bought and seems to have closed down.

Does anyone know where I could find some? I have sent a few emails to Guillot's website - but haven't had any response.

cheers

Kate

Kate
Walter Duncan Roses was renamed as The Rose Garden. They had a website that listed all their roses, including the Generosas and a significant number of OGRs. Unfortunately the website is down but the address is www.therosegarden.com.au. I'm hoping they are just revamping it before the ordering season. Other Generosas that I know of are Martine Guillot, Paul Bocuse, William Christie, Cybelle, Aurora, Celebration, Vesigny, Mme Paul Massad and some others I can't recall. Contact details from last years catalogue are The Rose Garden Pty Ltd, PO Box 592, Clare SA 5453. ph. 08 8842 3577 or email tom@therosegarden.com.au. Hope this helps.

Thanks Sally - I emailed Kay Duncan earlier this year and she said that Tom had closed the business. I hope this is not the case, and that it is a hiatus as you suggest.

Hi Kate,

I noticed that www.gardenexpress.com.au mention these roses.

Cheers
Dee.

Thanks Dee. A few places have a couple of the Generosas, but no one seems to have more than the most popular few [Sonia Rykiel, William Christie, Mme Paule Massad]. There are many more on the Guillot website, and they are just gorgeous - I would really love Veronique B.

I'll keep looking!

cheers

Kate, that's very common thing, it seems. I'm also very sad because there are dozens of excellent DAs I simply cannot buy anywhere in Australia, because they're not introduced here at all. And only few nurseries grow latest introductions (which are excellent and far superior, btw). American market is much better in that regard, whilst in Europe you can buy them all. So, whom to blame? Best place to buy roses is Europe, and everything else is pale in comparison. But even outside EU you'll find many problems obtaining roses from France, Germany or UK. Strict import laws and many other reasons prevent us from growing and enjoying some great roses.

My understanding is that David Austin chooses which roses are introduced in Australia and elsewhere. I think some thought goes into selecting roses suitable to our climate. The new one this year "The Endeavour" would clearly have been named as an Aussie intro.

Have you seen his photo on teh website? He thinks he is some kind of matinee idol!

Here is a link that might be useful: Mr Austin

Kate, that photo is maybe 20 years old, and he's much older now. In his 80s he is now. People think different things about him and believe this or that, but that's only because his roses and his vision have changed today's gardens and landscapes forever.
His latest book is very, very interesting, is not anything like his previous books, and I was thinking to write few lines about it and perhaps post a short review in this forum. Just give me few days -- I still have few things to do before I move.
