Your perfect rose?

If you were to order a custom-made rose from a rose breeder, what attributes, apart from disease resistance, would it have?

I would have the colour and form of Chicago Peace, the perfume of Mr Lincoln, the repeat flowering of Iceberg and the generous growth of The Children's Rose.

Of course I forgot one thing:- the lasting ability - both on the bush and in the vase - of Kardinal.

Ummmm.... I don't think I'd bother customising one specific rose - you'd only have one colour or colour blend at the end of the day, and variety is a major part of the whole rosie-growing allure.

I'd take my untold endowment wealth over to genetic specialists at the CSIRO (or MIT, or those 'blue' fashion victims at the Suntory labs), and say: "Okay, brilliant DNA geeks, gather round. I want you to genetically modify the breeding stock of EVERY rose to snip out the black spot susceptibility genes (and you can fix tomatoes and apples while you're about it). Just start with America Cl. or whoever, and do 10 a year until you get to Zepherine Drouhin. Thank you, and here's your first enormous cheque."

Happy Easter to you all. See you Tuesday.
