help needed - roses grow poorly

| Hi, I have grown a Renae & a Princess of Wales in ground for half a year where I used to grow mint & tomatoes before. They grow poorly, weak with leaves colour pale/turned yelloe. I tried giving them weak epsum salt & sea weed fertilizer solution but seems not doing any good. This does not happened to other roses that originally grow nearby. Any suggestion what I should do? Thanks. |

I have a similar problem. I have 170 roses bushes and areas where for some reason the rose doesn't grow. I constantly am trying to improve the soil. I now have roses in my vegie patch, but first I dug compost into the area, then applied Dymamic lifter long life three months before planting. Every two years I buy 2 tons of cow manure to add to the soil. I would lift your roses in winter move to another spot or lift rose, wash all old soil off roots, replace soil adding alittle osmocote on re-planting, also check PH of soil and correct if needed. If plants are lacking in nitrogen the leaves turn yellow. Hope this helps. PS notice you use the name feline are you a cat lover, as I am. |

| If you suspect nutrient deficiency (and I would - mint sucks nitrogen and tomatoes eat potassium) then the quickest test is to water the sickly roses with Miracle Gro, Aquasol or another soluble fertiliser for a few weeks. If the roses put on new healthy growth by the end of that time, you know you had a problem with soil nutrients. A good helping of cow manure with ongoing liquid feeds would be ideal for autumn, and then use a good granular rose food in late winter. |

| Thanks Sharon and Daniel. My backyard is small and I cannot find a good place for the roses; that's why they took over the place for herbs. I shall try improving the soil with cow manure. |

I have had the same sort of problem with Aimee Vibert growing in all day sun on a pillar but she is perfectly healthy until midsummer after a few days of really hot weather.I assumed she couldn't take the heat,so I planted Renae to eventually take her place and she now has drooping thin yellow leaves and poor growth too. I thought Renae would be tough enough to cope with heat and humidity. Is anyone else growing her in my sort of conditions? Pam. |
