sourcing roses in melbourne

Hi all,

We have recently relocated to melbourne from perth (must change my username...) and living in the southern Dandenong Ranges.

Having gardened on sand in a warm climate for the last fifteen years, I am now coping with the delights of clay and, so I am told, frosts.

Can anyone recommend rose nurseries on the eastern/southern side of melbourne, particularly for heritage roses. The few I have found so far have limited stocks, and some didn't even know what a heritage rose was - gasp!!

happy gardening to all,
Fiona

Have you tried Garden World at SpringVale? It's a very big garden center that I can think of...but my best advice before you go to any nurseries is to ring up and ask for a rose. That way, you can save time going there.

Another advice is to check your yellowpages for nursery directories.

Most of my Roses that I bought are from Garden World, and Essendon Garden center.

Yes, it's difficult to buy Heritage roses in Melbourne apart from bare roots in winter. Rose Paradise in Box Hill has a reasonable collection of species roses. The Perfumerie at the Briars in Mt Martha has a great selection of old DAs. Neewesteegs at Coldstream has some potted roses available on their rare open days. Reliable Roses at Sylvan sells pots up until Christmas.
My own favourite source is Merri River Roses in Warrnambool, but that's an 8 hour round trip.
But the catalogues are out now, so bare roots can't be far away.
Good luck,

Sue

You could try Mistydowns. They are at Creswick but do mail order of bare rooted. They have hundreds of old world roses. The propagate them themselves. Their catalogue is online or you can get them to post you one. I've been using them for a few years and their product is high quality without being too expensive.

There is a specialist Rose nursery fairly near you in Healesville called Magic Garden Roses. They have a great selection and do sell both barerooted and in pots.

I tend to go there to see the plants in bloom, before buying barerooted (often from Treloars) who I find very reliable.
