What is this beetle?

Hi all, new to the forum and new to growing roses, and I have a question : ).
I have seen these beetles on my roses and on the buds. They cause damage to the buds and are about 1cm or so long. They only seem to go for lighter coloured flowers. I have also seen them on my white Magnolia tree flowers. I've been searching on the Net for them and can only come up with the Japanese Beetle, which is similar in size, shape and behaviour, but different in colour.

What are they, and how can I manage them?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,
Welcome to the forum.
I don't know what your beetles are but we have different ones here in Vic-damned pests they are.
I have a no spray garden so I just wait all these pests out.
Someone else may be able to offer you a suitable treatment.
What roses do you grow?
regards
sandie

If those are Japanese beetles then we're all in trouble. You might have better luck googling for magnolia pests rather than rose ones - these may have strayed from their natural food for a munch on your roses.

Carbaryl kills beetles. An occasional spray of pest oil on the bushes also deters the blighters by gunking up their legs as they climb.

G'day Tom

These beetles look very similar to ones I am currently having problems with on my "Summer Beauty" flowering eucalypt. They hang around in groups of three or four, are "noisy" when they fly off, and, are pretty tough as I have stomped on a couple only to see them recover and fly off, seemingly unaffected!

Sorry, I can't suggest what they are or how to get rid of them - but I am currently looking for a bigger brick!

looks to me like the FULLERS ROSE WEEVIL -a grey brown coulor about 7mm long.spray with carbaryl or even better still a chemical with ovicidal activity to kill any egg around.
