pH, lime and organic matter

I understand roses in general are tough and grow anywhere but I understand they grow particularly well in South Australia where soils are alkaline. Have I got that correct? I notice when I give mine a dose of wood ash or some lime they seem to put on a better show. I have buitl up beds of heavy clay that I have added tonnes of organic matter to over the years. This organic matter breaks down very quickly and has to be constantly replenished. Doesn't organic matter make the soil slightly more acidic and should I be adding a little lime now and then. If so, how often and how much per square metre. I do check the ph from time to time and it usually around 6.5 - never more than that. I like to understand what I am doing that's all.

I think you will find that your roses are responding to the potash in your wood ash. They love the stuff. With regards to the organic matter, the best things to aid in producing the nutrients that feeds our plants are earthworms. And earthworms prefer a sweetish enviroment to an acidic one. So if you have got a thriving worm population in your garden, you've got it right. Cheers... Rosalie.

Thanks Rosalie - I have a sister by that name but she gets called Rose by everybody except our mother. I can understand about the wood ash - often wish I had a wood stove in fact but am reduced to powdered lime. I know they grow in acid soil because I have grown them in it but wondered if for optimum flowering and plant health I should be trying to make the soil more alkaline. I worry about how much and how often. I have built up beds on heavy clay and so am altering the environment somewhat. As for worms - I do find them in the built up beds when I am weeding through the cooler months so the soil there must be okay. I know the more organic matter I add the more worms I find and I do tell them to stick around but summers can be so extreme here I doubt they would survive! Can they survive? Thanks again

Hi frannyfrip, I live in WA where the soil is Alkaline, my roses show signs of Chlorosis time to time. So I give them some fertiliser that includes sulpher in it. And also i give them home made compost. Karima
