Once bloomers who repeat

I was surprised a couple of years ago to see my Albertine repeat in the autumn then last year Doctor Huey and Banksia Lutea did it too.
Lozza-who has loved and grown roses forever- says it has to do with our extended growing period in the southern hemisphere compared to the shorter, cooler summers in the northern hemisphere.
Makes logical sense when you think about it.
What has amazed me this year is two of my once bloomers who did their thing in oct/nov are now doing it again on new growth.
Aschermittwoch(Ash Wednesday)and Paul's Scarlet both started flowering mid January and AW is still having blooms.
Not a full flush like the oct/nov one but quite a few.
Paul's Scarlet had maybe half a dozen clusters of flowers.
It's another thing I love about roses-they are full of surprises! :)

RE: Once bloomers who repeat

Hi Sandie, my mum's Albertine has a few blooms later in Summer or towards Autumn. It is about 20 years old and grows in very sandy soil down at Balnarring. I have grown a cutting from it, but mine only flowered in Spring. But it is in a pot and only a year and a half old.
I was interested to read your earlier posting about growing roses from seeds. I had a go at this too this year. Only one of my seedlings has survived to the point of flowering. It had a very simple pale pink five petal form, and I could not detect any scent. But it was so exciting. I want to give it another go next spring.

Hi Lizzy,
I think Albertine has to mature for a few years before she
will consider giving a second flush.Mine hasn't done it every year either so I think it is only if the season is
suitable for rebloom.
Your pale pink single sounds lovely.Would love to see a pic next time she flowers.
Growing roses from seed IS exciting and I am going to do heaps this year.
I am letting hips form on lots of roses and will harvest them when they are ready.
This time though I will be a little more careful and at least note who the mother is.
I am not doing it in the hopes of having a commercially viable rose seedling but because it is an exciting and very satisfying thing to do-grow your own unique rose.
Well it was for me anyway.:)

Hi Lizzy - my Albertines are both repeating and have done so for a few years now, but just occasional blooms, nothing like that amazing first flush. The longer growing period may well ahve something to do with it. Adelaide d'orleans has repeated this year for the first time.
