Mail order roses

I am considering a few places. Hedgerow and Ross Roses for starters. Who has had experience wit them? When do they send out their roses? How are they packaged? How big are they usually (what age)? What condition are they generally in after travelling?

| I have had quality roses from Hedgerow and from Reliable Roses and some from Mistydowns (who had some attractive specials last winter) were also fine. |

Silkie Gardens at Kilmore is also good, Treloars tremendous, and so is Golden Vale. Any of the ones who advertise are usually spot on. |

| I ordered roses (lots) from Treloar's last year and they were fantastic plants and very well packaged. Can't speak too highly of them. |

| I've had good stuff from Thomas for Roses in SA and they have a huge list, including lots of hard to get roses. I got quite a lot of late-in-the-season bargain-priced roses from Mistydowns last year. Most were good but a couple were small and spindly and never came out of dormancy. |

| I'll put in a good word for Magic Gardens in Vic. Got some very excellent roses from them last year, and service to match. In among the 12 really good growers (my Adolf H and Valencia are now as big as the advanced bushes I bought from the nursery - oomphy!), there were a couple of weakly Joeys. MG Replaced them in a heartbeat, no questions asked, and apologetic, too. My feeling is that the lesser known or less commercially popular the variety, the better a mail-order bare root tends to be. Just an observation, no hard empirical data here, but I've found that the Joeys, the Fragrant Clouds, Charles de Gaulles, etc, are smaller to begin with than, say, the Adolf Hs and the Violinas, poss because they've been passed over last season and have had an extra year of growth before sale time. |

Reliable Roses is my favourite place to order from. Laurie and Jean are the nicest people you could meet. (No I don't have shares in the place-wish I did :) ) regards sandie |

| I prefer Golden Vale. I've always had great service from them. I've rang and had advice. When I was looking for a rose, they had one that wasn't in their catalogue. They're always worth a phone call if you're looking for something. The orders that I've received from them have contained a little extra surprise too. One I can remember was Carabella and another was Friends of Benalla Gardens. It's very nice to do business with them. |

| Reliable Roses is authorised by Australian quarantine protocol (or whatever it is between the States) to despatch to all States and Territories. |

Let's get together in November coolyoda-it will blow you away-the best time to go out there-at least twice-I usually go early nov and late nov-Lozza and Jean are so accomodating and will welcome anyone if they know you are coming. Any one else interested? I must issue a warning though-going there is a seriously dangerous threat to your already looooooooooooooong list of 'must have' roses. :) regards sandie |
