You can choose any bud, as you please. Those lower below on a stem are more dormant and those way up will be more vigorous producing new shots. ..... Also, all those varieties that have smaller and non-gloss leaves are more suitable for full sun positions in the gardens in Oz. Plus, they're generally more disease resistant too ..... - Tom

Dave, you can spray the foliage with Stress Guard which acts as a sunscreen by reducing the transpiration from the leaves. The burnt foliage is providing some protection (shade for the newer growth). Think about this before cutting it back

Wow, the things you learn in this forum - thanks for info; I have a couple of roses...came without tages but they look like Bantry Bay (supposted to be a climber, but are only in large pots so are only about 80cms high)- scorched from that stinker of a day!

RE: Sun burnt...

Hi Davlyn. In the two days last week when the temp where I live was 44 and 42 I not only had roasted flowers but 10 of my roses were comp;etely burnt. I have never had the whole bush reduced to such a sorry sight. All my other roses came through fine. I have no idea why this happened but I have decided to prune to at least half so that hopefully I will get the autumn flush. The leasves on my apricot tree were also crisped.
