Corn failure

Hi again I have grown corn for years, however we are in a new property and this year it didnt produce. The silks on the cobs were very small and only half of them had any silks. The cobs themselves had maybe 10 -15 yellow kernals on them, the rest were green. I grew them in blocks not rows. The only thing I can think of is it has been very hot here mid 35s every day with no rain, so maybe they didn't have enough water and also they didn't pollinate? The plants had ants crawling on them? Would that be the cause? There weren't any ear worms or catapillars. Corn has never been in this garden before. Anyway thanks in advance ofr you help. Emily

RE: Corn failure

g'day emily, yeh i'd go with the weather infuence, you would have needed to give them bulk watering, also reckon they would need to be very heavily mulched to keep roots cool and moisture in ground longer. with all that try another crop. len

Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

RE: Corn failure

Low K levels will cause this sort of problem in corn as well
