Spots on Broms

I've got a heap of broms in my shade house and others all around the garden. They all seem to have these small black spots on the leaves. Can anybody tell me what I should use to get rid of it.

RE: Spots on Broms

Sorry you didn't get a response earlier, there isn't much traffic in these forums any more.
Sounds like it might be fly-speck scale. I've included a link to a site which (you have to scroll down to about the 4th pic) shows what it looks like.
If you "google" under "fly speck scale bromeliads" you will get a few hits. some people have had success with confidor, others have used a systemic. If the problem is not too intense you may find you can clean up your broms by hand. If the infestation is very bad sometimes all you can do is ditch the plant after saving any offsets, and start over.
Whatever you do, DONt use ordinary white oil as it can block the plants ability to breathe and to feed through the urn.
There is a safer biodegradeable canola oil recipe that I've used in the past - described at
http://fcbs.org/articles/canola.htm

Here is a link that might be useful: bromeliad scale
