YELLOW lady beetles - good or bad?

Posted by daisy81 QLD AUST (My Page) on

My zuchinni's have been taken over by yellow lady bugs. Are these the 28 spotted type?
They appear to be doing a fair bit of damage to my poor plants.
Today I squashed as many as I could find, so I hope they are a bad pest!
Thanks in advance
Emily

One of my rose bushes had 20 or so yellow lady beetles on it not a while back, however they did not damage the plant at all. The bush was almost covered in powdery mildew and the little beetles ate most of it so I was happy to keep them around. I had read that yellow lady beetles were good for this, but I am not sure how to tell the difference between a bad and a good beetle.

Most Ladybirds Beetles are benificial eating aphids and fungus
Only the 26 spotted Ladybird beetle feeds on plants and they are
mostly found on potato leaves, read about them in the link below.
Hope it helps.

g'day emily,

the one with all the spots 26/28 whatever can't see well enough to count is the one that does damage on some plants as i have found they demolish potatoes and zucchini etc.,. but then when they are on the gooseberries they aren't eating plant so must be eating the eggs/larva of that beetle that demolishes the gooseberries (dunno what it's called), and also in my brissy garden when i was there all those l/beetles where eating the powdery mildew off of my zucchinis thay ate some leaf but mostly the mildew.

so appears to me they can be a bad bug and a good bug. i only squish 'em when they are doing damage.

Bad- its a cucumber beetle and they will feed on your crops! Try to spray them with something that has pyrithrin in it or try diatomacious earth also (both organic options!)
