black stuff

greetings all
i bought 2 natives,kunzea ambigua, about a year ago...one is doing fine whilst the other has a black coating all over the stems and bark plus a few white flea sized mites on the spikey lesves.
i dont want to treat till i know what they are.
can someone help with a solution

It sounds like it might be scale and sooty mould. Are the 'mites' really flat to the leaf and a bit waxy? Cheers, Dee. |

hi dee the mites are white and a bit hairy. the black stuff is evenly distributed all over the heavier growth on stems etc. hope this helps thanks stratton |

We have a lot of native insects (like mealy bugs)many have not been identified. You treat them like scale insects. |

Perhaps woolly ahphids. Google for pictures to identify. The sooty mould isn't really a problem. You can spray the aphids (if that's what they are) with a number of different products that are readily available even in the supermarket. I prefer one that is pyrethrum based, as it is less toxic to our environment. Cheers, Dee. |
