What's safe to compost in SEQ?

| Haven't had a veggie garden in the subtropics before so I'm wondering what things shouldn't be added to the compost heap in this climate, assuming one of those closed Dalek-looking compost bins is used, eg will fruits encourage fruit fly, or will the fruits decompose safely in such a bin? |

| g'day cestrum, basically as you said fruit fly infested fruit and i reckon grass clipping from the lawn they should stay on the lawn. reason being they can and often do contain lots of seed and not the seed that might be obvious all sorts of seed ends up on your lawn it may not germinate there but it ends up there. from waht blows in what birds deposit and what people and animals bring in on the feet etc.,. eg.,. nut grass, bindy some of the real bad ones. so if you can generate the very high heats needed in composting to deal with those very versatile seeds then you win but from my experience keeping heat in a pile and turning it for oxygen just doesn't work best answer keep clippings out of it. i have message in oz garden discussion you may be able to help me with it concerns firefox and thank you for your great help so far. len |

Hi Len I guess this means I have to pour past-its-useby-date fruit juice down the drain rather than on the compost! I'd like to help with Firefox (I'm a fan, as you know), but I don't know which forum you're referring to. Can you include a link? |
