Eradicating blackberry & honeysuckle!

Posted by Bowenlady Sth NSW Aust (My Page) on

I am new to the gardening forum, but hope to pop in regularly! We have a lovely sloping 1700sqm block in Bowral, NSW with several natural springs on it and loads of fauna... unfortunately the block is over-run with honeysuckle, blackberry and also privet, ivy and holly!

We want to protect the frogs, lizards and birdlife as well as the water. What is the best and most successful method of eradicating or controlling these pests? We've found Roundup quite good on the blackberry when it is young or freshly slashed, but the honeysuckle is a tough one!!

Thanks for any advice anyone has. :)

Cheers,
Anne-Marie

See now this annoys me!

In inner city melbourne for fifteen bucks a pop no less they are selling in nurseries little pots of bloody blackberry, which anyone whose lived in cleared country Australia will tell you grows wild and is a nuisance.

This is where our problems begin, some trendy people in the city decide to make a profit and the birds just poop it out all over the place.

Sorry about that rant. My parents had a hard time killing blackberry on their property no matter how yummy the fruit. We slashed, burned and had a professional come out and spray it all. It wasn't the end of the war, but it kept the battle down to a manageable level.

I'd have thought Honeysuckle would have fallen to that treatment. I'd ask someone to give you a quote on what it would cost to get it sprayed properly, because I noticed most noxious weeds have a habit of thriving even under the worst conditions.

Hi Anne-Marie, This may not be very practical for you but I have seen many of those pest plants eradicated very effectively by pigs. Left to do their thing they will dig the plant roots out and turn the soil over extremely well. Living where you do there may be someone who could help this way, otherwise professionally applied spray should be the best alternative.
