SE Qld tomato pests

I've done a quick google and a search of the gardenweb forum - but most links point to american problems

Now that I've lost my necatarine crop - the tomatoes are being hit by fruit fly, but that's not all - there's large caterpillars eating the fruit too. The fruit fly traps are working overtime and taking out a lot of flies - hopefully I can stay on top (or near the middle)

In the past few days I've lost about 3kg of green fruit to the caterpillars

can anyone tell me what they are and what can control them?

the bigger opnes are pale green and eat their way into the fruit, the darker ones seem to be eating their way out??

Those darker ones most likely came from all those butterfies you had a while back.
The green ones would be bud worm.
They enjoy apart from rose buds tomatoes, sweetcorn, beans, peas and strawberrys
They also feed on luttuce, cabbage, apples, pears and stonefruit
One thing I have learnt with living in Qld.
You cannot grow anything from Oct to Feb because if the heat and rain does not get them the insects do.
Just plant pumpkins and onions and keep away from the soft things, saves a heap of heartache, time and water..
Cheers..MM.

Paradisi, besides going around daily picking off grubs you could try some of the organic sprays like garlic spray, etc. I don't know how well companion planting actually works but you could try planting some deterents. Just google these for plenty of ideas.

Also you could try getting a couple of ducks. Apparently they are less likely to hurt your vegies than chooks. I've been thinking about trying a couple if I can find a breed I like. Good for grasshoppers and snails anyway.

thanks goldhills

I had a muscovy duck last year, but there were too many hassles with the staffy - he loved duck poo and would follow the duck around the garden turning her over and licking her feet and cloaca to get at the poo

I've deciode to bag the tomatoes - got some on order and will use them on the next lot of fruit -

companion planting is nice - lots of garlic and basil for me as well as marigolds, but it doesn't seem to deter any of the pests.

they breed them tough up here in queensland :-)

Paradisi, just browsing around before and was checking out Annette McFarlanes website. She uses exclusionary netting. It is in the November section. Other ideas on her site are interesting too.

I can relate to the dog, my dogs do the same with the chooks :)

Here is a link that might be useful: Annette McFarlane
