I mentioned this in another forum, but there is a product on the market for "fencing out" unwanted animals from the garden (including your own animals). It uses an electric barrier but the voltage is low and, as the maker says, only about the same as the static jolt from touching a car door. It can be used along/atop a fence or at ground level. It is called "Pet Master" and made by Gallagher (website www.gallagher.com.au).

...and on a radio gardening show this morning was mention for timber paling fences and the possum problem - to top the palings with plastic pipe (cut a slit through and push onto fence).
