Hi peoples!
There are little black bugs on my carnations and the flowers are looking a little sad. Anyone know what they are and how to dispose of them? Helene |

| "little ...black" ......could they be fermentation flies??? Think they can cause damage to the roots...... Is the soil very damp there often?? If it were these little insects then I would think drenching would be suitable - maybe someone else can make a suggestion as to what to use. |

| If they are really tiny they could be gladiolus thrips which also attack carnations, iris and a few other lily type flowers. If this is the case they love hot dry conditions and hate cool wet conditions. Effective irrigation in greenhouses can reduce populations quite well. In the home garden you should probably prune off the flowers (If you can bare it) and solarise in a plastic bag or otherwise destroy them. There are various insecticides that can be used but as thrips are so small and feed within buds and flower petals that they can be sheltered from the spray. If you must spray, maybe Confidor would be the least worrying in terms of toxicity. Beat A Bug is a 'soft' pesticide but is a contact spray and is not residual. |

| Thanks for the suggestions. i think perhaps they could be thrips. So I have removed the flower heads and sprayed as well. |
