Curl grub - how to kill in an established garden?

I think I have FINALLY worked out what the problem is with my worst garden bed! I have tried plant after plant in this spot, to no avail. They don't die, but they don't grow either. They just sit there, gradually wilting away. Currently there is a row of gardenias that I have been patiently nursing. I have tried watering, feeding, seasol, PH testing, quiet pleading ...

When working on the watering system in this bed recently, I lifted out one curl grub after the other. The magpies loved them. I now realise in retrospect that there have always been heaps of them in this bed, but I didn't realise the harm they can do to roots until I read it recently.

Is there a poison I can apply without harming the gardenias? I can't dig enough to get them all, though I have removed as many as I can manually. Poison is always the last resort for me, but I'm definitely up to that point!

They had a procduct last night on Better Homes and Gardens called Mac's something (I'm sorry, I missed the name). It had tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil in it. It was mixed with water and applied (only once) with a watering can. Sounded quite good and non toxic too. You might be able to find it in the magazine or on their website.
Cheers,
Dee

Thanks Dee - I found it as a hose pack in Bunnings, so what the heck, I did this bed and all the ground around it as well, under pebbles and over lawn. I figure the little buggers might have just moved sideways to dodge it! Fingers crossed ...
