Another Ant Question

Posted by showells Sydney, Aust. (scotthowells@iprimus.com.au) on

Is there a generally accepted "safe" limit of the number of ants in a vegie/herb garden. I have noticed a number of ants on a new passionfruit vine. They seem to like the new shoots.
Thanks,

Scott

RE: Another Ant Question

i generally don't bother what ants are in my gardens as they do help with the breakdown and distribution of organic material plus they clean up any dead bugs that appear. when they become a concern is when they bring in the aphids, mealy bugs/thrips, then you need to do something to move them on.

they may look like they like the new shoots of the passionfruit but they could be depositing aphids on them.

RE: Another Ant Question

I agree with Len. Keep an eye out for aphids. Ants around new growth are up to no good. If aphids appear, hose them or wipe them off. Otherwise, don't worry about the ants. As Len says, they help in the distribution of organic matter and their tunnels help aerate the soil.

RE: Another Ant Question

This raises the old question "Which came first, the ant or the aphid, scale etc?

I tend to think it is the ant. I get a lot of pink scale and the best treatment is kill the ants at the same time as the scale.

Doug.
