Urgent help required for acacia - advice please!!!!

Posted by Amelie Brisbane (My Page) on

I have an acacia baileyana purpurea which is about 4 years old and about 4 metres tall.
Today I noticed at the fork of a couple of it's branches, that it appears to have been almost ringbarked. The outer layer of it's trunk looks like it has been scraped off and the scraped off bark remains near the wound. One of the wounds looks like it has small holes nearby.
Am I right in suspecting borers?
I would hate to lose this tree. If I were to remove the affected branches I would need to remove a substantial amount of the tree as the damage is about half way up the tree, so I would prefer to treat it if at all possible.
I have had a look on google for advice and one site suggested an injection to control borer.
Is there anything I can treat this with myself?
Please help!
I'd like to treat this as soon as possible.
Thanks a lot!

I think this type of borer attack is pretty common for baileyana. And speaking of common, that's what baileyana are. They are even regarded as a pest in some (many?) parts of the country.

Much as you may like the tree, it might be better to chop it out (it makes good firewood) and get another one (or something different). Wattles are not known for their longevity.

Thanks for the reply - yes, I know that wattles are short lived, but was hoping to exptend this one's life. It is a good screening tree.
I have decided to try to treat the borers, but am not holding out too much hope.
To my knowledge, this is not a weedy or common tree up here.

Give some of your local nurseries a bell, Amelie, and ask if they can help...ask for someone with some knowledge of acacias.....or borers ...or preferably both.

Daz.

acacia dying - advice please!!!!

Hello... I'm from Argentina, and stumbled on this site when searching for a solution. I have an Acacia baileyana, and I'm afraid it's dying. About 6 months ago, the leaves started to dry and fall, and now almost all the canopy is dry. It's springtime here, and the tree managed to bloom and grow some new leaves... but not much. I also noticed some "wounds" and an amber "goo" coming out of them (any relation with the leaves falling?).
The tree is about 20 years old, and maybe it's time to cut it down, but my grandfather planted it the year he died, and my family is very fond of it.
Any ideas?????
