Two-spotted mite

I'm having problems with two-spotted mite or, as it used to be known as, red spider mite on my vegies. Most likely the warmer than usual winter has contributed to increased populations but they seem to be worse than usual. Normally I just wait a couple of weeks and the predatory mites turn up to control them but so far they haven't arrived.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to control them without affecting predatory mites? I try to mist the plants occasionally to increase the humidity but until we get decent rain this is difficult on a large scale.

Hi Goldhills, seems there isn't much you can do till the natural enemies come.
In my Pest and Diseases book the only organic control is::- Water the affected plants from above, remove and distroy badly infested leaves or whole plants promptly, and control weeds. I dont know if that is any help to you, apart from buying the predator mites seems its the only way..

Have a look at the link below.....it reads, try vacuuming them off the plants. Cheers..MM.

Here is a link that might be useful: Two spotted Mite

That would be a good look - walking around the garden with my vacuum cleaner:)

It's bad enough having to vacuum in the house but to do outside as well...

Seriously, thanks MM I'll check that site out.

I have used oil sprays to control mites on my fruit trees,I was worried that it would burn.
You need to use the right oil spray and in a cool spell.
I still get a bit of leaf drop tho
