Daffodil Leaf Problem, Please help!

Posted by susie_11 Queensland,Brisbane. (My Page) on

Hi I decided this year I would start buying some bulbs for the garden. I bought some blue bells and yellow and white daffodils mixes. I planted them in March and they have just come up really well, so far I was very happy with my bulbs! But just now I have noticed with the white daffodil they haven't flowered yet and the leafs have started to go yellow and then brown! I haven't been over watering them, but do water them about 3 or 4 times a week. What would cause this problem with the leaves and can I save my bulbs so they won't die? Thank you Susie.

Not sure what could be causing the die-back, unless perhaps some insect problem or rot underground. You might have to sacrifice the worst-looking one to dig up and see if there is a problem with the roots or anything else.

To be honest, Daffodils don't really do well in Bris climate, though there may be folk who can get them to bloom - they are more for cool or temperate gardens.

Some of the cool climate bulbs can be tricked into flowering once, by fridging them before planting for a few weeks, but you are unlikely to get a 2nd blooming.

On the up side, there are plenty of warmer climate bulbs, both spring and summer flowering that will do well in Bris and the even better thing is that many don't need to get lifted and stored.

It may be a bit late this year but sometimes you can rescue some marked-down bulbs at supermarkets etc or if not, make your plans well ahead next year.

Just off the top of my head, some of the bulbs that do well in SEQ are Babiana, Sparaxis, Ixia, tritonia, Freesia, Gladiolus, Zephyranthes, Watsonia & Hippeastrum.

Unfortunately you often have to be careful where you buy bulbs from too. They may have been too old, or have come from a cooler climate as well.

Don't be put off, I'm sure you will have the garden of your dreams

Thank you for answering! I think it may be a rot problem do you think it would be because of too much water. We have had a lot of rain lately! I have had one lovely yellow daffodil out in flower and was very happy with it. I have had the bulbs in pots on my veranda where it is a little cooler with morning sun. I will pull out the rotted bulb out and see if their are any other problems! Thanks again!
