Hi,

I replanted my daphne (bad move - they don't like being transplanted)and now it is looking very sick. I've tried fertilising and keeping up the water but its looking really terminal at this stage. If anyone has any advice to help save my beloved daphne, I'd love to hear it!

All daphne resent transplanting, and pruning should be kept to a minimum. They need well drained humus-rich soil, slightly alkaline to slightly acid in sun or partial shade and mulched to keep the roots cool. Perhaps you could take some cuttings and make babies.

I can sympathise! I do some casual gardening for a lady in my village. Her daphne was in a plastic 12" pot and looking poorly. It had a lot of buds but the plant llooked to be in suspended animation. Using some top potting mix I re-potted it and it started keeling over within 2 weeks. I re-potted it again and now it is virtually dead. Everyone I ask about daphnes say they are temperamental beasts. Today my neighbour said they don't like fertilizer too much.

Daphne survive best on neglect! Most people kill them with kindness

Hi Karen, DITTO I know people that can kill them just by looking at them.To see smell a good one is rare in deed. Peter r

We had a daphne which had become crowded out by an orchid in it's pot and in desperation it was all tipped out, the orchid removed, the daphne roots washed clean and then it was re-potted in average mix. It survived, even thrived for about 8 years until a virus infection wiped it out. Just shows how they are un-predictable.
