On my crows nest ferns I have these little things on the back of the leaves. They are like little white lines a couple of mm long. they must suck on the plants because the leave a yellow area. I have sprayed them with insecticide, but it didn't really work and I don,t want to do that again ,because I found little frogs living there.
Are they a type of scale? Do you think I should wash my plants with sunlight soap and water, maybe? I get rid of other pests like that. Its just that they are pretty big and in a difficult spot and Iv'e seen a couple of big hairy 8 legged things on them! Also would white oil work? or would that hurt any frogs that might happen along?

RE: little white things, aprox 2mm long.

sounds like mealy bugs lilly,

look for ants they bring them in and farm them for the sweet solution the excude. white oil is the best treatment but then ferns won't like the treatment, you could try it mixed at 25% the recommended rate, or mix a solution and wipe only the affected areas, as i am not sure what effect the white oil will have on the frogs if applied by spray.

you could also remove the affected fronds if that is not too many the fern will rejuvenate just look a bit bare for a while. when you find the ants you need to get rid of them.
