Holes in lawn

I have recently found dozens of holes in my lawn. They are approx 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter and appear to be deep. There are no mounds of dirt around the holes and in most cases there are several holes in a group arranged in a circle. I live in Alabama. Any ideas?

The holes may be from birds chasing grubs or you may have grubs comming to the surface to pupate in your trees

I do not know what animals you have over there but here in Newcastle, Australia I have holes in my lawn and they are from bandicoots. They also eat all my flowering plants, particularly new buds on roses! I have solved the problem by sprinkling chilli powder around. They do not like the taste on their paws and have moved to another property. They are an endangered specie so I hope I am not harming them in any way - just spicing up their diet I hope.

I have recently found similar holes ... did you ever find out what was causing them?

what's a bandicoot? I live in Philadelphia USA and we don't have those.

Yes, at least the people in Alabama and Philadelphia can eliminate one cause of holes dug in their lawns; bandicoots. For want of a detailed description, bandicoots are like little kangaroos that scratch around at night looking for grubs, roots, etc. When you sit out at night they will hop silently around your feet but if you make a sudden move they will spring away at lightning speed. Back to the holes, I have seen similar sized holes, about 25mm (an inch for those who haven't caught up with metrics) (cheeky!!) and they are usually spider holes, but can also be dug by wasps, beetles and probably a lot of other insects. Whatever they are, I hope you leave them to "do their thing" Petelong.

I have the same thing and I think at this time of year (well a few months ago) all the cicadas come out of the ground which is where they hibernate/grow/develop. If the hole has a very fine web around the entrance I would say it is a funnel web spider but if you have heaps of them then I would say cicadas. I now have their shells all up the fences etc. I have found them to be quite deep and about an inch or 2.5 cm in diameter

Okay, now I remember a video game called Crash Bandicoot. Things that dig holes in lawns here are squirrels, moles, voles, cicadas and prairie dogs (out west).

I have holes in my lawn (as of today 4). They almost look like ant hills, but the hole in the middle is larger (maybe 1/8-1/4". When I put the hose on tese holes, they go down maybe 2". They almost look like snake holes, however we don't have snakes here. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have recently noticed thousands of holes in my lawn. They are about 1-1/5" and pretty deep. I have had a problem with voles eating all my vegetables. Could that be them? How can I save my lawn? Please help......

I also have holes in the lawn but with little piles of soil next to it. The lawn has also gone all soft and spongy to walk on. What could it be. My lawn is only 8 months old and it is the middle of winter so didnt think I would have beetles or army worms. Any ideas?
