Harlequin Bugs invading our garden

Does anyone have a solution to our problem? We've had these bugs in our garden for as long as I can remember but just recently they have absolutely taken over our gardens, front and back. They're even crawling over the weatherboards and windows. Next thing they'll be taking over inside the house. The only thing that kills them is boiling water thrown on them. This is a bit hard to do when they're in such numbers as we have. We've tried spraying with water and liquid dishwashing detergent & an over-the-counter pest spray. Neither of these worked. Please help, as they're not only eating our plants but taking over the house also.

RE: Harlequin Bugs invading our garden

I have been 3 years fighting these things with dish liquid, garlic, capsicum and any other spray some one would mention. THey came in a load of wood I had delivered (for fire, half a semi load) so your comment about wood rings true, they must breed in it or something. Any way some one even told me to sqash some in water, leave for 24 hours in warm. strain, dilute and spray ( think it was this lady's book by a Jackie French) sort of a homeopathic solution, treat like with like. Did that no good. Any way I did not want to use commercial spray as I consume my plants. My father, old market gardener, had been telling me to use pyrethrum spray and it's safe etc. Well at wits end, read the label, one day holding, I waited about 4, but by gee it worked. I will repsray when they build up again or their life cycle dictates, I expect another hatching soon. Any way give the pyrethrum a go, I actually sorry I didn't do it sooner. Can get it in garden section of Coles or Safeway made up in spray bottles. Hit them hard. I don't know if one can get it in a concentrated form and dilute as required or not. Good Luck Casper
