Curl grubs in my herb patch

Hi guys.
If anybody could help me, I have just noticed that my herb beds are full of curl grubs. Does anybody know if they will damage my herbs and if so are there any safe ways of killing them?
Thanks
Scott

RE: Curl grubs in my herb patch

I have just noticed today a couple of similar questions on the forum in relation to the great Curl Grub conundrum (which I probably should have read before I posted the above) but after looking through these and calling a couple of nurseries here is what I have found out:

- there are a couple of products available to kill curl grub (granulated and hose on);
- allegedly they only kill a narrow range of 'grub' like species; and
- the active ingredient is not taken up by plants.

Until now, the strongest pesticide I have used was pyrethrin but under severe duress (my herb patch was suffering badly) I ended up using Searles Lawn Grub killer. I will keep you posted on how it works.
Cheers

Hi LG, you could try Carbryl for chewing insects, not taken up by plant, one of the safer ones. Peter r

Done a little scratching around previously on this matter and found nothing on the shelves (for home use) that is registered for curl grub. I know carbaryl and diazanon have not worked in the past however Judy McMaugh suggests fenamiphos. This is available as 'Nemacur' in my area and is sold for nematode removal - worth a shot!

If you have a dog, you can train it to keep the curl grub population down! I trained my little dog, a miniature breed, to dig only where and when I told her, and she'd eat the grubs she found, which she regarded as real treats! She just LOVED gardening. Until I gave her the order to DIG! she'd keep her nose perilously close to the fork or spade I was using, waiting to pounce on the grubs. She lived to 17 1/2, in case you're wondering.

try EN's. These are parasitic nematodes that attack lawn beetle larvae and eat them from the inside out. They do not attack plants and do wonders on my lawn e.mail address is info@ecogrow.com.au
