Blackbirds digging up new seedlings

| How can I discourage birds eg blackbirds from digging up the compost-water barriers around new plantings? They are slowly, but not deliberately (!), destroying my new garden! |

Hi Truffles, I have a collection of old wire type office trays that I use in the vegie garden over my new seedlings. It lets in the sun and rain but not those cheeky little seedling destroyers. Perhaps you can find something like that. My Father had some old racks from dishwashers that he used to use. The other option is some wire fencing bent over into a half circle shape to place over them (like a tunnel shape). None of these look ultra chic in the garden, but you only need them for a short while. Good luck, Dee. |

Some one told me to use old cds and drill a hole through middle and attach to a stick so they spin freely. This seems to frighten the birds. Peter cundall also had a propeller made out of two drink cans on one of his shows. may be in Gardening australia site. Jan |
