lichens on roses

Hi all
Have two old, established roses in my new garden. They have lots of dead wood and what looks like lichens growing on them. The lichen's(??)leaves are about 1 inch long, pale green, and look a bit like grass. Similar things are also growing on the green shade cloth of my greenhouse (nowhere near roses). I've cut out the dead wood (hope it's the right time, don't know much about roses)on which most of the lichens were growing. Will they come back? The roses seem to be dying from the top, so I chopped all the dead bits off.
Hope you can help me
