hi all
our 2 chooks have to compete with a family of 6 to 8 currawongs that continually raid their feed bowl which we fill 3 times per day.
i have put pest nylon netting over most of the area to keep them out but they still walk in the little opening i have to leave for our 2 girls to get in and out.
i have thrown stones etc but they dont care....back they come..
does anyone have any ideas.
thanks
stratton

Do you need to leave the food out, I just feed our chooks twice a day so I don't leave food out. They also wander around the paddock for a few hours.

RE: currawongs

Our chooks only get fed once a day the pellets go in a container in the chook house beside the water. When hubby used to give them a very small handful of mixed grain of a morning and just throw it on the ground there were birds everywhere so he stopped that and it made a difference...now they get it in the night on the chook house floor after the door is locked.

Ours also have a lot of room to wander around in so dont need as much pellets..All I can suggest is feed them of a morning before you let them out and the same in the evening after you lock them up for the night..Have you tried making a scarecrow, we did to get rid of this pesky crow and it worked...Apart from that well entice some noisy miners into the garden when you have got them not many other birds are game enough to come into the garden. Cheers..MM.

RE: currawongs

Miners will not work with Currawongs as the Currawongs are a bird of prey. They have been known to eat smaller birds up to the sizes of a baby possum. (see websites for Sydney Wildlife and Museum of Australia and read some of the links for more info). They are however a lovely native bird, so maybe you could try feeding your chooks what they need at night after they are locked up and consider a feeder somewhere closer to the Currawongs for their own use. Currawongs are fantastic at keeping the area around them pest free ie grasshoppers, and during breeding season will eat mice and rats as well. They shouldnt hurt your chooks and have chosen to live near you as obviously you like and feed birds (the chooks) and the surrounding food supply must be pretty good too. We really do need to work with our local wildlife rather than against it, it benefits us and them.
