Ladybirds - friend or pest?

| I have a mealybug infestation on two of my potted gardenias, and have tried white oil and Pestoil with no success, so would like to try ladybirds. I'm considering buying a ladybird house, planting Lavender Cotton and maybe putting a brew of honey and yeast. But then I read on the Internet that some ladybirds have a nasty habit of infesting your home - especially the Asian variety. Can someone who has experience in this matter please advise me whether attracting ladybirds is a good or bad idea? |

We have a few ladybirds around and they are not a pest. Try soapy water from the washing machine or put a bucket under your laundry tap to save the soapy water when you wash your hands. Throw (I used to dip the branches of my Gardenias in the bucket) the waste water over the plant and around the base to help kill the eggs (?) in the soil. If you don't treat the soil, they keep hatching and re-infesting. You have to treat the underside of the leaves as well. |

| Thanks for your advice Scorpion. If I pour the laundry waste water over the plants, are you sure this won't kill my gardenias? Should I pour clean water over it immediately or just leave it? |
