Anthracnose in tamarillos

I bought a couple of tamarillo plants at a market, and they have grown to a good healthy size, but I never get any fruit from them. The fruit develops multiple black spots and eventually drops before it ripens. Discussion with a DPI advisor indicates this is anthracnose. According to 'What pest or disease is that?', anthracnose can be transmitted through the seed. The treatment is copper something - ie copper oxychloride etc. We have fungal problems with other fruit (paw paws, lemonade fruit, even mulberries!) but they seem to be a bit more under control - we do actually get some fruit off the trees. We prefer to go organic ... so, my question is this: do we try treating these trees, or should I just rip 'em out and burn 'em and the mulch underneath 'em and buy from a more reputable nursery?

RE: Anthracnose in tamarillos

Hi Eve, The cure is worse than the cause, its just our good climate that helps these fungal problems along, humidity, moisture and high temperatures help make a very good petrie dish for all these things. I think you may have to bite the bullet and try for some winter crops, vegies, fruits. Please don't blame the nurseries they sell what some people want, its just not a good season for these things at present.Good luck. Peter r.
