White (Spanish(?) ) Snail Problems

Hi Everyone. I am having a prblem with millions of these damn snails damaging my trees. I initially thought that they werent causing a problem as they just seemed to climb over everything..but after a while I noticed that one of my golden elms about 2m tall wasnt looking so good and after removing the snails I found that they had ringbarked the tree. It died not long after. I have tried snail bait which works ok but as I have a rather large garden (5 acres) it takes a hell of a lot of snail bait to keep them off my trees. I was wondering if there is anything out there that will get rid of them or at least keep them off the trees.. I have tried ash around the base of the tree which does work until it blows away but i dont really have a good supply. Also tried beer (which my dog thoroughly enjoyed) but the snails didnt touch it.
Help!!
Grim
