Sick apple tree

| I am losing a big branch a year off my ancient delicious apple tree. The bark seems to curl up and become quite brittle after which it's obvious that the branch is dying. Looking back, an apple tree of mouth watering but unidentified apples, died completely about ten years ago with similar complaint.
Could it just be old age?

It could be old age, but I think it is worthwhile to examine it very carefully, have a look at the main trunk any cavities with borer or rot around the trunk, anything else unusual, check any previus pruning areas for evidence of disease, look at the branches, is the weight balanced on both sides or just one? when was the last time you fed pruned etc? how many plants are around the area competing? I know it may sound ridiculous, but the tree is giving you an indication that somethings is wrong, its a matter of working it out, I have been called in too look at many trees and it is usually one of the above and if caught early enough can always be fixed. by the way the optimum amoumt of water for a tree is about 6 litres a day. |

Can I still save a sick & crusty old apple tree? The barks are literally peeling off, some are split wide. A few bark areas have the white stuff drippings. At first, I thought it was bird's poop but now i believe it's coming from the tree itself. I have been cutting off the dead branches and there's quite a few branches that were as big as my arm. It's very obvious that it has been long neglected. It's a single tree and it gives apples every year. It has lots of branches with apples and they were not good. They were irregular sizes with multiple brown dimples. Can't be eaten. It's a McIntosh variety. At this time in June, I am just removing dead branches and not pruning for fear that it goes into shock. Can I still save this tree or is it best to start with a new one. Thank you very much. bdavid |
