Ajuga - how and when to propogate

Posted by RoseDreamer Vic Aust (My Page) on

I have a couple of large ajuga (Caitlin's Giant I think) making wonderful weed smothering ground cover.
Please advise on how and when to propogate - thanks.

You can dig rooted sections of this almost any time, as soon as it has some spread on the plant. Each little bit puts down new roots. Water it well, dig a piece with soil still attatched to the roots, and plant it where you want, and water well in.
Winter is the best time for dividing perennials, but ajuga is really hardy, and I have dug pieces in mid summer successfully.
Cheers, Jan

Thank you Sparaxis - it is supposed to be cool this weekend and we have had some rain so I will do what you suggest.

Ajuga is also easy to propogate by layering. Put soil over the side shoots to encorage them to root quicker.
