Climber for pergola, grown in pots

Hi all,

I am looking around for a suitable climber to grow in pots over our new pergola. I was thinking 3 large pots (maybe 30cm x 50cm x 50cm deep), and something deciduous. It gets full sun, especially afternoon - which can get very hot in summer. We could probably hook up an automatic watering system to them...

I love wisteria, but haven't heard of it being grown in pots and wasn't sure whether it may not get big enough to cover much of the pergola.

Another thought was ornamental grapes... I would appreciate any other ideas / advice anyone can offer!

Thanks,
Juliet

You could try Petrea volubilis - spends a lot of time in flower.

thanks Liatris, I have looked on google, and it looks beautiful. I might give it a go.

Use the biggest pot you can get and try to line it with styrofoam as the biggest challenge wil be to keep the roots cool enough for the plant to prosper. Do you get frosts? If so check out to see if Petrea can tolerate them. Robyn

I also had to google it...looks lovely!

Do you think it would do well in Adelaide, in a west facing area, and in the same situation (ie a pot) as for the OP? I couldn't really find much on growth zones for it in Oz
Thanks

Hi Juliet
Not deciduous, but you might like to check out Quisqualis (Rangoon creeper) if you haven't already made a decision. A friend has one growing in half of a twin set of concrete laundry tubs, I'm not completely sure that that's enough root run for it but then hers does it tough.

We also had one in the ground doing pergola duty. Nothing to stop yours sneaking roots into the ground, is there? Have a lovely memory of a slightly uptight bull who used to like to stand under a quisqualis with flowers draped across his hump :)

Mandevilla are also quite good in tubs. Also not deciduous but not rampant & flower many months. I agree with the above comments, I think you can have summers as hot or hotter than ours, need to use brains to stop plant roots stewing
