| There's some cultivation information for US gardeners on the following page: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/1012/ Abutilons are very easy to grow in Adelaide's warm temperate Mediterranean-type climate but I don't know how they'll fare in Oregon - don't know what your climatic conditions are. Hope this helps. |

All i do know is they absolutely hate frosts and sand. my girlfriend grows them in a protected spot near her verandha. Good well drained soil (not sandy though) regular watering/mulching/fertilising and pinching leaders back to make them thicken up. They receive full afternoon sun. |

| They will grow & flower well in cool temperate areas. Definitely survive frost to -10C. (From personal experience). |

I've got 2 growing in my garden and they do quite well. I don't give them that much attention, but they do get tonic and fertiliser when I do the roses. They are sort of like quiet achievers. They aren't too demanding but they flower continually and make a good height plant for structure in the back of the beds. I've got a red one and a really unusual salmon coloured one. Margaret |

I have found Chinese Lanters[Abutilons) extremely easy in this climate, flower all the year round, don't need much attention, occasional food as the leaves begin to show their veins, and that is all. But I have no idea what your climate is like, nor your soil.. Judie |

| I was given some small cuttings some months ago. I potted them and they have all taken and are about to flower. I hope that I am planting them out into the right spot. We do get frosts, but hopefully from what INSIGNIS has said, they should survive. What about sun?. Would appreciate some advice. |

| I grow mine in quite a bit of light shade and they love it. I think like many things, they get bigger with some shade, but are tough enough to hang on in there in more sun. They flower like mad, and the honeyeaters seem to like them too. |

| Mine flower all the time but are also prone to mealy bug and scale. I'm sick of removing it all so I'm giving up on them. |

| Are you sure Ione means Abutilons? What about the yellow berries in the paper cover? I always knew these as Chinese Lanterns, and they are so easy to grow from seed. Just plant them. They do like a warm climate though. |

| Abutilons or chinese lanterns are easily struck from cuttings and easily grown in cool climates. In fact they are one of the few plants that will bloom in sun or shade. The problem with seed is that many of the new varieties are cultivars and the seed may revert to the original plant. If you take some cuttings you will get a flowering plant quickly and the plant will be exactly the same as the one from which you took the cutting. |
