Pot plants for dry shady verandah.

Hi there, I'm looking for some suggestions for plants on the southern side of our house. Some would be covered by the verandah, others not. It only gets a little sun in mid summer, other wise shaded by the house. We live in SW vic so can get cold in Winter (very wet too!!), but still pretty hot in Summer. I,m looking for something attractive to look out over, from our new window in the bedroom. Any ideas would be greatfully received. Cheers.

Have you considered aspidistras (cast iron plant)? I love them and have large pots of them in various situations. They don't seem to mind whether they are in full sun or full shade or anything in between, are extremely hardy to frost and cold (although the leaves tend to get a bit tatty in windy situations), and don't seem to notice if you forget to water them. The leaves, dark green and a bit stripey, have a tropical look to me and an established pot looks lush and rich. They do have flowers but these are insignificant and bloom almost at ground level and will only be found by accident.

Syngoniums grow into a nice large plant and there is the pink as well as the green. I had a Devil's Ivy in my south bathroom and it did well, got a bit straggly but I just coiled it over the shower curtain rail. Fuschias prefer shady places and the range!! Impatiens. Is there anything in the ABC fact sheets that would do for pots as well as for gardens?

Geraniums/pelargoniums? I have them in hanging baskets under the eaves of my south facing verandah (but I am in Brisbane) - they're tough. If you plan to have pots you could plant whatever takes your fancy and rotate as the conditions change or when something is in flower - have summer pots and winter pots perhaps. |

Perhaps you could consider having some cliveas. There are orange and cream varieties and different size flowers. They are more than happy to be in a pot and to be in shade as well. They are flowering here at the moment.
