Viola's are finally flowering

Posted by Desi_R MELB Aust (My Page) on

I bought my viola's half dead from a Kmart sale and decided to plant them in a circle underneath my very bare Magnolia tree.

Their dark purple and yellow faces peering up from the mulch really were worth all of the four bucks I paid for the twenty of them!

Just wondering if anyone else has got any bargain plant stories like mine. I love reading them!

Cheers

Desi.

Hello there Desi

I too found some Violas in the dead and dying corner of our local nursery. Put them in front of Lavender thats planted round the rotary clothes line as that was the only spot at the time and they are looking good now. Both are flowering together and as I said look good.

Just a bit of TLC at times can work wonders. Quite a bit of my garden has come from that corner!!! :)

I find generally the best bargains at Kmart. Big W and Bunnings half dead plants are far too expensive.
But probably the best bargain I didn't buy was a 2 metre tall Eumundi Quandong for $2.

I don't think you can get much cheaper than free! As I was leaving a nursery a few years ago I was admiring their lovely prolific flowering mounds of Vinca, especially the white ones with pink centres. I couldn't help myself and took a tiny cutting, and I mean tiny! Well I planted it in my back garden and it took off at a great speed and grew to a beautiful little rounded shrub that even at night glowed white from the moonlight. I was quite proud of my Vinca that was covered in flowers all year round. Yes I said "was" my beloved husband attacked it with the whipper snipper, down to a few sad branches. It looked like he went at it with a machete! I was horrified, and never let him forget it! What is it with men and pruning and edging that makes them seek and destroy! My neighbours and I all have horror stories about this problem. Sorry guys! The good news is my Vinca is tentatively growing back and in a few years should look lovely again. [No thanks to hubby!] Sorry I went off on a tangent, again couldn't help myself.Cheers Brenda.

Thanks Brenda

That was a great read. Nothing beats freebies. There was a thread in another section of this forum that was devoted to silliest things done in the garden. A lot of people proffered up their husbands, sons and fathers as models of NOT what to do when pruning.

Well I'd never grown biennuals, annuals or bulbs before and this is my first attempt. So far the viola's look great. 16 out of twenty freesia bulbs I'd planted have sprouted leaves but no flowers yet. So I can't wait!
