How to prevent lavender going woody

All my lavender goes woody with very thick stems and looks untidy. It grows easily with no care in my area, so I like this variety. Any suggestions to prevent it growing into trees?

The only way I know of is to keep it pruned from an early age. This invariably means sacrificing some blooms though, but it's worth it. Pam

I don't think we can really prevent it getting woody unless it is kept small. Does it really matter? pruning encourages floewring.

I've got two Lavender plants in my window box. No idea what type they are. Got them from Chris & Maries plant farm and the labels were incorrect, but after they got too big I chopped them haphazardly and the new growth is soft and grey green. I noticed about a month ago that they were both getting woody at the back and I thinned it out by pruning and new growth is filling out the holes. My lavender hasn't flowered for over a year, so I can only attribute this to lack of sun. They only get four hours of morning sun in Winter and about five and a half in summer. If you really can't be bothered pruning it out with clippers a hedge trimmer will do the job. Cheers Desi.
