 o
growing carnations

Last year I bought 15 Sim carnations from a stall at the ABC gardening show in Sydney.
I left some in pots, and planted some in the ground.
They keep getting a fungus, or a wilt on the bottom leaves.
Also, I have staked them, but they still grow all over the place. Is there a special way to stake them? or does anyone know how commerial growers grow them?

don't know a lot about them but I do know they like lime. There are special frames that you can buy to put around them to keep the taller ones upright. Basically they are just a cylinder of mesh a bit larger at the bottom than the top and about a couple of feet tall. Mine get a bit of the fungus but it disen't seem to knock them off. I'd suggest you try and keep them with a good air flow around them but if to bad you may have to resort to some type of fungus spray. Did i read some where that a condy's crystal spray is a good alternative? Hope someone can clarify that. They strike readily from cuttings - at each leaf node a new shoot will come out. I just pot up pieces with a couple of nodes above and below the soil level.
Cheers Mrs B
