Nightshade? Solanacea family?

A neighbour showed me a piece of a stem with a leaf of it and a couple of fruit(s) and asked me to id. it! I had seen the plant about 6 months ago growing in a nursery at Kingcliff, NSW, and am sure it was one of the Solanacea family, I think a nightshade. The plant has unusual jet black stems with serrated or toothed edges to dark green leaves growing I think alternately though the stems were mostly bare except at the tips. The neighbour said he had a flower but it died - purply-bluish, tubular in shape. The fruit is a greyish nobbly ball about the size of a golf ball with pale white flesh around bunches of browny seeds slightly resembling the shape of a walnut. Sorry, that's about all I've got, anyone got any clue as to what it might be?

It cetainly sounds like some sort of solanum to me, but there are so many, it's hard to pinpoint without a picture.
Cheers,
Dee.

Yes, I know, unfortunately my computer suddenly told me it cant find the port my camera is at and no matter what I try I cant seem to fix the problem. My printer has also gone that way and I haven't got around to pulling out all the wires and connections to take the thing to the computer rapair shop. Thanks anyway Dee.

Probably a Datura, have seen some purple ones for sale round nurseries myself. Have a "Google Image" search for Datura or Datura metel and you'll probably find it.

Thanks Alison, I think you're right, I've been trying ever since I posted that message to remember the label on the one I saw at the nursery and the more I think about it the more I think it was a Datura. Not Brugmansia, Datura - the bush form of Angel's Trumpet. I'll go have a look at that website you mentioned. By the way are you 'Alison' who lives at the Gold Coast?

Hi Bill, yes it's me. I have some seedlings of a purple one up - can't remember the source. I think I have seeds of the double yellow bushy one if you want any of those I can send a few.
