| Some months ago I put a penstemon in a pot intending to divide it however time got away. Should I be dividing a penstemon now? It has lush new growth and side shoots. Do I take off the side shoots and use a hormone powder or plant starter? Thanks |

| Winteris the BEST time to do it :-) If they have roots you don't need to use rooting hormone, but a drink of seasol might give them a kick on. When you divide them, plant them straight away so the roots don't dry out. You will often see tiny roots already forming on the side shoot nodes, even if they are not in contact with the ground. These will also root very easily. |

| I just chop up the clump in winter and plant the segments. Cuttings root relatively easily anyhow. |

| Thanks Sparaxis & lomatia for the advice. I'll get onto it now. It is interesting that there are side roots even without the soil. The picture that sprang to mind was those crucifix orchid side shoots with roots in mid-air. I'll check out what is happening more closely. Thanks again. |
