Sprekelia lily

| We'd have a bit of rain in the past week and I noticed that my potted sprekelia liles have brown mushy leaves. Is it too late to save them - i could try repotting or planting them in the ground? |

| I reckon I'd be trying something! Remove all the mushy leaves for a start, then assess the situation. If the pot seems to be holding a lot of moisture, either repot using a more freely-draining mix, or pop into the ground if you can give it a well-drained position. I have found that nearly anything does much better in the garden than in a pot, but that might simply be that they are more forgiving of neglect if in the ground. :] With the sprekelias specifically, though, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you liberate them. | Pam, I agree with you about the pots, watering them in summer is a pain! In this case I hadn't got around to planting them out yet, when I found them like this. I'll do it ASAP, can't hurt, I just wasn't sure if this was a good time of year to do it. |

Marie these things are just about unkillable. I have them in very free draining soil, planted throughout the garden. In some areas they remain green all year. Don't worry if they peg it I'll provide you with some more. Do as Pam suggests, trim of the dead stuff plant them into the ground with their necks above the ground so they can dry out.

Hi Teresa,
Thanks for the encouragement and the offer. I moved them to a sunnier spot and the leaves dried out, but no sign of green - I'm hoping that they are dormant! I'll plant them this weekend and hope for the best. |

| Marie, I've got them both in the ground and in pots. I don't do anything to them, except feed them in spring and summer. Mine have brown mushy leaves too, they always do at this time of the year. When they're dying down for the winter it's the end of autumn and it's usually wet. If you're concerned about this, move the pots to a dry spot so the soil dries out. They should be fine.
