Bougainvillea that does not flower

This bougainvillea is growing up the bare bottom part of a kowhai facing north. I planted it 3 year ago. Leafwise it is doing very well but not a flower has been seen for many's the long month. It is supposed to be 'Californian GOld' and once in sunnmer there were a couple of orange flowers but since then and before just lush green growth. What is it lacking or getting too much of I wonder?

They like it tough! this means no fertiliser to speak of and little water if in heavy soil.
Mine are planted beside a shadehouse in well drained sandy soil. They receive 10 minutes water every 48 hours, and no fertiliser. They, are the old purple one and the red and are a riot of colour for months every year.

The two newer pink bambino's are in barrels receiving two hours dripper water every 48 hours water. Barely flower. Last year i started a regime of pinching out every runner, this year I have more flowers, but they are still getting way to much water so will have to alter that by summer. Think I might put them out into the ground as I don't want to alter that particular irrigation setting.
I've seen many different one's growing around SA and none flower as well as the original 'oldies'.
cheers Mrs B

The white I have is in flower. I found in the last place that they flowered at different times. I think I saw somewhere that you have to prune carefully or you can cut off the flowering shoots. Must look before I do mine.

Hannah I had a Scarlet O Hara a beautiful Red, now the only time it started flowering was the week before Christmas, every year it was the same, and it did not flower at any other time it grew against the brick wall of our house facing the north, in a North Eastern suburb of Melbourne

Now I live in Qld, things are different here my Bougainvillea flower one, could be more times a year with fifteen of them it hard to remember which one flowered when.

But I do think they flower at different times of the year, at present I have three different Lilac ones in flower, and the bright purple ones. Today I noticed the pink and red bracts are starting to colour so they will be next.

Then my Orange ones and last the whites. I also have a Californian Gold but as I am training it as a hanging standard I have only had a couple of flowers on it as yet.

I only water mine once every two weeks, when they are flowering they dont get much water at all, dont forget they thrive on neglect in Qld, so maybe you are watering too much.

Do you prune them, I find the more you prune, the more flowers you get. Hope this helps.

Cheers MM.

you can't beat a Mrs Butt. In my previous garden - i had one that was enormous - never got watered and couldn't be controlled. The first thing the new owners did was chop it down - and all the neighbors rang me to tell me. However, I have its offspring in a pot - hope continues!!!!
My bambino has been slow to grew - but after 18 months its finally flowered - I water it twice a week for about 15 minutes per dripper

Thanks for all the input - I'll prune it and add some other older varieties

RE: Bougainvillea that still does not flower

I've got all nervous about pruning it now - it' s mid winter and the b is sprawling flowerlessly all over the place. Do I cut it down ruthlessly or what? Is this the time of year?

Hannah usually you prune after flowering, one of my books say that plants in vigorous growth can be heavily pruned with out harm.

But seeing it is winter and in Victoria there are the frosts to worry about, do you get many frosts as I see you live down near the beach, if you do, prune it just do it lightly,

But try to do it after flowering in the summer when it has a lot of new growth, pruning it little and often I find you get more flowers and less thorns

I have a tango which is the most luscious pink and orange...we cut it back to a stump in july last year, then we had the cold cold spring and we didn't think it would sprout, it did and with a bang..in October and has just finished It was huge and COVERED in flowers.
We did spray with all sorts of nutri tech seaweed and microbes (for hardiness) preparation 501 ( for luck) and later some potash along the stems.
Scarlet o'hara is only 6 months old and is 2 m high and flowering lightly now.
Both will be cut back by 50 % in a months time

I have one of the old purple variety, flowers for 12 months of the year. Very vigorous, never remember to water, never feed,is in a totally enclosed courtyard, gets pruned whenever it gets out of hand no matter what the weather. Its still flowering, although drastically cut back about three weeks, and this in the South West of Vic which is COLD. Judie
